When Balloon Boy originally let rip with his confession (among other things), you could literally hear his father gasp for breath. Mom seemed to try to re-direct the comment in the preferred direction, Dad ignored it and haltingly tried to stammer on.
In that situation, and assuming it had actually been an accident, most parents would have asked more questions to understand why the child thought that the "show" was ongoing. That, or they would have explained it to him.
The deer-in-the-headlights look of the parents, especially the father, says it all. Nothing they could say or do, in the way of "damage control" could convince me otherwise; though, I don't have a strong opinion on it, one way or another.
I'm not really sure, but I love the fact that the kid vomited on TV after they found him.
